Best Credit Unions
The best credit unions are judged by their membership and total assets. The top three of both lists are the same. Number one is the Navy Federal Credit Union from Merrifield, Virginia with $36.4 billion in assets, 3,194,292 members, and a loan to share ratio of 110.16%. In second place is the State Employees Credit Union in Raleigh, North Carolina. They have $16.7 billion in assets and 1,498,062 members. In third is the Pentagon Federal Credit Union with $13.0 million in assets, 864,803 members, and a loan to share ratio of 109.55%.
This is where things change just a little. The credit union with the 4th largest amount of assets and is only 6th in membership is the Boeing Employees Credit Union in Tukwila, Washington. They have $8.6 billion in assets, with 588,755 members. The 5th largest in assets is Schoolfirst Federal Credit Union in Santa Ana, California. They have $7.8 billion in assets, with 400,721 members. It is ranked number 9 for membership.
The Golden 1 Credit Union out of Sacramento, California is ranked number 6 in assets. This credit union has $6.0 billion in assets, with 694,836 members. It is ranked 4th in membership. From Chicago, Illinois comes the 7th ranked in assets, named Alliant Credit Union. They have $5.9 billion in total assets but are ranked 27th in membership with 234,003.
The 8th ranked credit union in assets is the Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union out of Tampa, Florida with $5.9 billion in assets. They are also ranked 8th in membership at 471,441.
All of this data is from 2008, and although the amounts and membership has changed slightly, they are all still the best credit unions with competitive bank rates for their members.
