Can Online Banking help the working poor is something many are now wondering. The break off for the poverty line is $22,314 for a family of 4. For every family that does not exceed that amount of income in a year is considered living in poverty.

The minimum wage set by the federal government is currently at $8.67 an hour. For a full years work without overtime this comes to $18,033.60. This is over $6,000 below the poverty line. There is no money for investing when an income is at this level, but there are ways to use the online banks, especially the checking accounts to help cut costs of the poor.

With the income that is coming in, the working poor can have a checking account that allows them to do their banking online. Even without a computer, they can use one at an internet or a public library. This will allow them to pay their bills online.

Paying your bills online has two major advantages. The first is the savings of what it would cost to mail the bills or postage. Since each bill costs $0.44 to mail, and the average home has an average of 6 bills each month can save over $31 a year by using their online banking accounts. While this does not sound like much, it will be a positive contribution to lowering the fixed cost each family has to pay.

Another place many of the poor fall short of that is associated with their bills is paying them late. Sometimes it is easier for many to never see the money and just let the schedule on their checking account pay the bills. Without having the money in hand, they tend not to spend it.

Can Online Banking Help the Working Poor? To a point they can. While they cannot always take advantage of the bank rates, they can use the system to their advantage in many areas of their financial business.

The first thing to look for is a low minimum balance required for free checking accounts along with a smallest number of debt transactions. The one thing that is standard amongst all of the free checking accounts today is the requirement of at least one direct deposit a month.

This one direct deposit does have a minimum amount in most instances, so those with customers with an income below $250 coming in on the direct deposit must be choosy shoppers when deciding on a bank. Other than that, this is a straight forward term for most.

What most American citizens have noticed is the past couple of years is that many of the financial institutions are no longer offering free checking. This banking service has been reduced from over 70% of the banks to less than 50% of them presently. This makes it your responsibility when investing your money in any of the online banks to know the terms of your accounts.

The current bank rates on the interest you can earn are well below 1% on average, but there are a few community banks that are still offering good rates. A good example is Liberty National Bank, in Kansas which is offering a bank rate of 4.11% APY for local residence on their checking accounts.

You can still find free checking with on line banking if you look. It is getting tougher with less than half of the financial institutions offering it, but they are still out there.

The best of the online banks to offer the best bank rates at this time is from Farmers Bank and Trust.

For those that do not meet the requirements the APY is lowered to 0.15%.

The New Mobile Banking with Bank of Internet USA was introduced back in May of this year. This was an enhancement over what they were providing their customers. This new mobile service not only allows a person to conduct their banking with their mobile web service but also via text messaging.

With the new text mobile banking a customer can check their account balances, bring up their latest transaction, transfer funds between Bank of Internet accounts and also receive text alerts. The exact alerts you will receive is dependent on the one you chose for each of your Bank of Internet accounts.

This is a financial institution that made is name with its Online Banking services for investing and saving your money. They only offer this type of service over the internet so the cost savings of not running the brick and motor branch offices can be passed down to you, the customer in terms of better bank rates.

This is also one of the few online banks that are set up to allow deposits to your account over the internet. There is the MyDeposit system that allows any customer to use the program and scan their checks. This will automatically deposit the checks into their accounts so there is no need to mail the checks to this online bank.

The Bank of Internet also has rewards checking that not only can you earn up to 10% off on qualify purchases when you use your Visa Debit card, but you will also obtain interest on the balances you current hold. The current interest rate for the rewards checking account is 1.25% for balances above $5,000.

This is just some of what the New Mobile Banking with Bank of Internet USA has to offer their current customers.

Current Trends with Online Banking that are being used by many of the financial intuitions across the nation include ways to entice you to use their services are not a lucrative as they once were.

Before the financial crisis the large banks put the country thru, they had many offers that would reward their customers with. This was similar to the same kind of programs that the credit card industry used to entice customers to spend money they did not have by offing them a gift for going deeper into debt.

For those customers that liked investing their money in good programs thru their checking accounts, the days of rewards are over for the most part. The last of the major banks to cancel their debt rewards program was Chase.

While earlier in the year they were no longer offing it to new customers, they have now decided to end it totally. If you have been enjoying the rewards program from Chase, get your free token gift before October or it will be gone forever.

Of the online banks that still have this type of program is Capital One. Their rewards program is for free airlines miles when you spend money on your checking account. While there is no rewards program for any Savings or money market accounts, you can make a transfer into your checking account to earn bonus miles.

There are restrictions and limitations but the current bank rates are competitive for their interest bearing checking account.

Current Trends with Online Banking are for the financial intuitions to offer as little as possible while charging fees on nearly all types of services to increase their profit margins. It is the thanks the American public gets for bailing them out.

Current Trend in Checking Rates with Online Banking is relatively the same as with other deposit accounts from the financial institutions across America that are not extremely attractive.

There are some bright spots available for local areas in particular markets that are considerably better than the average. This allows for those wishing to be investing or holding on to their money a few relatively good options depending on where you reside.

The best online banks are near the top of the list for checking account bank rates. The leading one is out of Kansas called Liberty National Bank. Their checking account is earning an APY of 4.11% APY for deposits below $10,000. This is good for Kansas residents lonely. Non-Kansas residence will earn an APY of 0.10%.

There are two financial institutions that are offering checking account APYs of 3.01% at this time. From Medina, Ohio is the Westfield Bank. They are offering their customers the Big Dream Checking Account that is earning an APY of 3.01% APY on balances below $25,000.

Danversbank out of Massachusetts is another bank offing their customers the Free Rewards Checking account that is earning an APY of 3.01% on all balances below $25,000.

The Heartland Community Bank from Little Rock, Arkansas has available to their customers the Heartland Interest Plus Checking Account. This account is earning an APY of 3.00% on all balances below $15,000.

From the state of Missouri is an APY of 2.75% APY being offered from the Royal Bank of Missouri located in the St. Louis area. This is with the Majestic Checking account and is available to those with deposits below $25,000.

The current trend in checking rates with Online Banking is not the best, but there are a few bright spots if you know where to look. These checking account rates were posted on August 19, 2011 but are subject to change without notice.
