How to Find the Best Checking Account

There are some steps you can take on how to find the best checking account for you. With all the checking accounts available, figuring out which one will work best for you can be confusing. This is why many tend to stick with their existing checking account regardless of whether it is a good deal or not.

Make a list of the top four or five things you absolutely have to have such as overdraft protection, online access, maintenance fees waived with direct deposit, internet bill pay, rewards program with debit card use, no-fee withdrawals at any ATM, low balance requirement, and interest bearing. If all you need from a bank checking account is a simple checking, ATM, or debit card access and bill pay, you may just want to get a free checking account. Basically, a free checking account will not charge you if you go below a minimum balance and will not charge a fee per item.

Go to the websites of several different banks to see what types of bank checking accounts they provide. Compare not only the banks but also what each has to offer as far as free bank checking accounts versus an interest bearing checking account. Also, shop around for the bank checking account that offers the most options you need. Look at large banks, local banks, and credit unions.

Look out for high interest bank rates on credit balances. Some of these only last for a certain period of time, while others only apply for balances over a certain amount, so make sure you know what is involved before you move everything over to a brand new checking account. If you do not tend to carry much of a credit balance each month, then do not be tempted by high interest rates and look for other features that will benefit you more instead.

If you always find yourself in the red, make sure you look for a checking account that offers a low rate of interest on pre-agreed overdrafts. This is an important point. If you have not agreed to it in advance, you could find yourself stuck with a hefty fee.

It will benefit you a great deal to know how to find the best checking account that will meet your needs.
