Natural Gas ETF List

The Natural Gas ETF List at the present time includes 5 different ones. They include United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG), First Trust ISE-Revere Natural Gas Index (FCG), iPath DJ-UBS Natural Gas TR Sub-Index ETN (GAZ), Jefferies TR/J CRB Wildcatters Exploration & Production Equity ETF (WCAT), and the United States 12 Month Natural Gas (UNL).

The natural gas industry has seen a 14% growth in the past three years. This is mainly due to new discoveries of reserves and improved drilling techniques like horizontal drilling and improved fracking techniques. While coal is still the largest energy source in America with 44.6%, each year it continues to decline.

Natural gas on the other hand is continuing to grow and now is at 23.3% for the year 2009. By the year 2019, natural gas is expected to overtake coal as the major energy source for the generation of electricity in America.

Because of the recent new discoveries of natural gas deposits and a rise in production, the prices of a unit of natural gas have declined. Just like oil, this natural resource has a finite supply and the prices will reflect this when the demand increases, like it does every winter in America.

The UNG is the benchmark for the price of natural gas. The investment with this ETF is for near month futures. FCG has its assets in the stock of natural gas producers. GAZ is an ETN that has its assets in futures on natural gas, along with the interest earned on these contracts when they are used as collateral on US Treasury bills.

WCAT is an ETF that invests its assets in exploration companies involving natural gas. UNL is similar to UNG with assets in cash and future contracts.
