TwinStar Credit Union

In November 1937, TwinStar Credit Union was started by a math teacher at Olympia High School together with 15 teachers. It was difficult to get a small loan in those days, especially on a teacher’s salary. They started the Thurston County Teacher Credit Union for this purpose. Their first loan was for $150 in 1938. In the first 10 years, there was only one loss which was 85 cents in 1948. In 1950, they got their first “branch” at room 346 at Olympia High School, using it 4 days a week. The first permanent branch was opened in 1972 and has been the only branch until 1980.

The name was changed in 1981 to Twin County Credit Union when it merged with some of the small credit unions starting in Grays Harbor County. It continued merging with other credit unions in other counties and in 2006 it was renamed TwinStar Credit Union. In 2009, it expanded its field of membership to include all residents in Washington state with locations in Vancouver, Longview, Aberdeen, Ocean Shores, Centralia, Chehalis, Onalaska, Morton, Tacoma, Lacey, Olympia, Tumwater, and Yelm.

They have several savings options to fit every customer or every family’s needs whether you are saving up for a home, a vacation, or looking ahead to retirement. Aside from Basic Savings accounts they also have Youth savings account, checking accounts, IRA Shares, Planned Savings, Shares, Money Market Savings, Premium Money Market, and CDs.

As of 11/01/2009, for the Savings deposit rates the APY can be as high as 1.50%. For their Money Market deposit rates, the APY can be as high as 1.10%. For their Checking deposit rates, the APY can be as high as 3.00%. For a 12 month CD the APY is 0.75%. For a credit union, these rates are competitive with other bank rates.

You can receive your dividends monthly though some accounts need to have a minimum balance. There are no minimum opening deposits for some accounts and for other accounts the minimum opening deposit is low. Online access is free as well as ATM access. From humble beginnings and noble purpose, TwinStar Credit Union is worth checking out.
